Export your WhatsApp chat

This walkthrough happens on your phone, with the WhatsApp app.

This is what the complete path looks like, step by step, on an Android phone.

  1. Step 1 Example — not the real screen
    Mamá

Open the conversation you want to export.

  2. Step 2 Example — not the real screen
    Mamá
    • Nuevo grupo
    • Ver contacto
    • Buscar
    • Archivos, enlaces y docs.
    • Silenciar notificaciones
    • Mensajes temporales
    • Estilo del chat
    • Más

Tap the conversation menu and choose the last option.

  3. Step 3 Example — not the real screen
    • Reportar
    • Bloquear
    • Vaciar chat
    • Exportar chat
    • Crear acceso directo
    • Añadir a lista

    Choose Export chat.

Careful: Clear chat sits right above Export chat, and deletes the conversation forever. Check before you tap.

  4. Step 4 Example — not the real screen

Si añades archivos multimedia, aumentará el tamaño de exportación del chat

    Incluir archivos Sin archivos

WhatsApp asks whether you want to include the media files.

Choose Include files: the extra size is precisely the photos and voice notes you want to keep. With Without files the memory ends up with only text, no photos and no one's voice.

  5. Step 5 Example — not the real screen

Iniciando… Por favor, espera un momento.

WhatsApp prepares the file. It may take a while depending on the size of the chat.

  6. Step 6 Example — not the real screen
Chat de WhatsApp con Mamá.zip 18,4 MB

Choose where to save the generated file.

Its content and order change depending on your phone's brand; look for the option to save the file, even if you need to swipe the row of apps.

  7. Now, what do I do with the file?
    • If you are uploading the file from this same phone: you do not need to do anything else. When the time comes, find it in Downloads or your file browser.
    • If you would rather upload it from a computer: send it to yourself on WhatsApp, then open it from WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
    • Any other method you already use to get files onto a computer also works — Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, email, a cable.

You already saved the file. Here is what comes next, depending on where you upload it from.
